buy custom Human Relationships essay

buy custom Human Relationships essay Introduction The American history has continuously changed in the past centuries. This can be attributed to the social changes caused by the emerging technologies and the efforts put towards the realization of the American dream. As the history changes many writers continue to explore the unfulfilled promises of the dream for some segments of the United States population. As the writers in this piece of work show, the stories of the minority groups and the migrant struggle in the American culture and history are diverse and many people live in such struggles all days. Many writers, from Henry Thoreau to Susanna Rawson have written literature exploring the human relationships with the land and the environment, especially in the West. They expose the struggles and suffering among migrants and other vulnerable groups, for example, women, who have played a crucial role in the journey towards achieving the American dream but end up being denied access to the promises the US has to offer. Thoreau celebrates America in his ecological writing, while criticizing its faults in his call for civil disobedience. Rowson addresses the miseries existing in women, who she suggests as not having any legal or political identity. Literary sentimentalism or sensibility feeling emerged in England in the mid to the late eighteenth century, and reflected a similar trend in that continental literature. It primarily developed as a middle-class phenomenon, stressing on the emphasis on feeling or compassion as a desirable character trait in the emergent middle class. One of the reasons of the rise and spread of sentimentalism was that the readers took pleasure in the feeling itself, but it was also linked to the growing activism. Activism is the concern for and awareness of the suffering of others as reflected in, for instance, concerns about child labor, the antislavery movement, charity schools, police reform, campaigns for better hospitals as well as in response to suffering caused by the rapid rise in industrial capitalism and urban the urban misery that was caused by exploiting labor practices. Charlotte Temple Susanna Rowson published her novel Charlotte Temple in 1794, which became Americas first best seller. The novel inspired feeling; generations of readers from all classes, men and women, wept over Charlottes fate. In this novel, Rowson portrays a remarkaly common and realistic situation: it is about the seduction and betrayal of a young, innocent and ignorant girl leading to her subsequent death in childbirth. Rowson, addressing the young female, assures her that there are many others in a world where there is no political or legal identity, where sexual double standard prevails, and women are trivialized. In her preface, Rowson terms compassion as her inspiration in writing the novel and hopes that her words will eventually help in preventing some of the miseries that she addresses. The mid nineteenth century is the period that is most commonly associated with sentimentalism in the American history. This sentimentalism has been characterized as conservative and a rationalisation of the status quo, and a means of affecting social change. Most critics agree that it is associated with domesticity and femininity. More recent studies, particularly among female critics have addressed the aesthetic and cultural value of the mid-19th century sentimentalism. Civil Disobedience Henry David Thoreau is the writer of the book called Civil disobedience that was published in 1849. Thoreau asserts that governments cannot be justified because they are generally more harmful than helpful. In his opinion, democracy cannot cure this, because majorities by virtue of being majorities, also, do not gain the virtues of justice and wisdom. An individuals conscience should not be seen as inferior to the decisions of the majority, or that of a political party; and so it is not desirable respect the law so much just because it is right. He suggests that the only obligation a citizen has a right to assume is doing what he thinks is right at any time. People do not have to obey the law; law does not make men any more just. Moreover, by their means of respecting law, even the well-disposed are made agents of injustice. The writers in the above content share an interest in the effect of political and economic systems on workers, activists and writers. In their work, the losers mostly tend to be the ethnic vulnerable groups in America; unskilled workers, ethnic immigrants, those at the bottom of the business or industry hierarchy and the American society itself. Many of these groups have been and still are lower class color laborers. Migrant workers, who are mainly African Americans, work at planting and picking jobs that the middle-class white Americans would want and even today they are denied the basic employment rights and benefits. Many writers and commentators have been fascinated at the power of fiction in Charlotte Temple to unravel the social fabric. More recent readers of these and other early novels have concluded that reading fiction has consequences going beyond the purely aesthetic. Modern writers recognize the importance about how the writer achieves the effects she does, questions about technique and form and questions such as why Susanna chose to use an intrusive narrator in this novel. However, such questions cannot address the ways in which the novels discussed in this paper and other forms of literature have been products and agents of social change. To address this, broader questions have to be answered as to how significant it is that the development of novels in the 18th century is coincidental to the current understanding of individualism, selfhood and democracy and how we can account for the fact that a majority of the novels written in US advocated for greater access to education for the poor and women. By responding to such questions, we are reminded that the practices and ideas we sometimes take for granted such as sexuality, democracy, self and marriage do change over time. In conclusion, this paper interrogates the private and public past of the Americans.A more thorough and imaginative examination of history can change peoples perception of various issues. Most of the past novels were rich in form and content and points to the wide social, economic and the geographic diversity of the readers. This is because most of them were centered on men women and life situation that are much like those of the readers facing the questions of work, economic security, family, faith, relationships and values. The novels were studies in character, in both senses of the word. As readers see the elements of themselves in the wide range of fictional characters, they get an opportunity to experience their own selves that are separate from their stations. Imaginative identification with the characters in those books formed of class, gender, nation and ethnicity allow readers to practice alternative selves. Thus, reading contributes to a growing sense of personal autonomy as presented with the new frameworks for selfhood that is embodied in fiction. For instance, Rowson says that she intended to encourage those who felt low just because they did not have friends. Buy custom Human Relationships essay

Nigeria civil war Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Nigeria civil war - Essay Example By such a level of analysis, this student hopes to explain the conflict more fully. The â€Å"Who and What† of Boko Haram: Founded in 2001, the rebel Boko Haram is a Salafist Islamic insurgency that wants to overthrow the existing democratically elected government of Nigeria and replace it with a government founded upon Sharia’ah law. This particular group was founded in 2001 by Mohammed Yusuf. Keeping in line with the radical level of Islamic groups that exist throughout the world beginning at the turn of the 21st century, Yusef saw the existing Nigerian government as corrupt, worldly, and unrepresentative of the Islamic communities that live throughout northern reaches of Nigeria. In trying to understand the Nigerian Civil War to a more complete degree, one should understand the fact that Nigeria is a multiethnic, multiracial, and multi-religious society (Nwenta, 2013). A large percentage of Nigeria is Christian; whereas a large minority is Muslim. It should not be un derstood that the entire Muslim population supports Boko Haram. However, a great deal of support has been generated for Boko Haram within territory that it occupies due to repression, threats, and a certain level of approval on the part of the general population. The Government and Natural Resource Wealth: From the government perspective, it must be understood that Nigeria is a resource rich territory. The government has been able to fund its activities and provide basic services to its population due to the fact that it gains a high level of revenue from these natural resources. This is both a blessing and a curse due to the fact that the Islamic insurgency is interested in getting its hands on the revenue from the economy. In order to understand the Civil War to a more effective degree, it must also be understood that neither side of this particular struggle is ultimately representative of the â€Å"good† or the â€Å"bad† (Yenta, 2013). Two Sides to a Bloody Situati on: Whereas it is true that Boko Haram has been responsible for many tragedies, such as murdering entire villages and/or killing indiscriminately based only upon religion, the governmental response to this separatist movement/civil war has been equally heavy-handed. Many examples exist of the government forces indiscriminately murdering large groups of people due to the fact that they supported or gave refuge in some way shape or form to Boko Haram. This ultimately is a counterproductive effort on the part of the strategic resolution to the Nigerian Civil War. Due to the fact that the government response has been so heavy-handed, it has oftentimes turned individuals away from the government into the arms of Boko Haram. In order to understand this insurgency to a more full and complete degree, it is necessary to understand the disillusionment that has taken place within Nigeria. Many individuals involved in the Civil War have only come to be involved due to the fact that they no long er believe that the government can have a positive impact in their lives. In this way, they turn to Boko Haram as a way of seeking to find another path in the process of nation building. Many outside nations have tried to provide support for the government; however, the level of corruption and the failure of government forces to be able to secure their own territory

Parody vs Spoof Essay Example for Free

Parody vs Spoof Essay People are often confused about the word or the concept of a â€Å"Parody†. They often thought that it is synonymous to a â€Å"Spoof† because they share the same features that are commonly misunderstood. But there’s a difference between the two; and this paper aims to redefine, disambiguate, and clear the concept of a â€Å"Parody† from the concept of a â€Å"Spoof†. This paper will explain the concept of a â€Å"Parody† in general, using music videos specifically from YouTube to have a concrete example of a â€Å"Parody† in order to have a firm grasp of the concept. What is a â€Å"Parody†? According to Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary, a â€Å"Parody† is: a literary or musical work in which the style of an author or work is closely imitated for comic effect or in ridicule; a feeble or ridiculous imitation. While according to Britannica Encyclopedia: In literature, parody is when a person closely imitates an author’s style or work in order to ridicule or to provide comic effects. The word comes from the Greek â€Å"Paroidia†, meaning a song sung alongside another. Parody differs from burlesque by the depth of its technical penetration and from travesty, which treats dignified subjects in a trivial manner. True parody mercilessly exposes the tricks of manner and thought of its victim yet cannot be written without thoroughly appreciating the work that it ridicules. Basically, a parody is an act of imitation of an original work by slightly altering its original style and content but still able to obviously show the original work in order to make the parody effective for the audience; its purpose is to critically ridicule, mock, and show the folly and absurdity of the original work through exaggerations and humor. It’s an implicit comment on the original work by showing his comments not by directly telling it in the parody. What appears serious in the original work is shown ridiculously because through comedy, all of the things that are not accepted by the society will blur because of the humor and laughter. Thus satire comes in if the parody goes beyond the style or content of the work and attacks the author or the maker of the original work. Here’s a good example of a music video parody by The Key of Awesome!, entitled What Makes You Beautiful One Direction Parody! Key of Awesome #57. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t7CHfqg0wd8 A parody of the music video of a boy band named One Direction and their song called â€Å"What Makes You Beautiful†. In here, We can see that the maker of the parody retained the concept of the music video and just altered the lyrics and show the folly and absurdity of the original music video through humor. It’s a little bit satirical because of some of the lyrics were pertaining to the boy band itself. Now that we have define what is a â€Å"Parody†, next is that we need to define what the concept of a spoof is. Spoof is defined in the Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary as: to make good-natured fun of. Thus, it means that a spoof is just for fun sake. In music videos, a spoof is something that incorporates the concept of a original work and alters it but doesn’t comment or critically pertain on it. It’s just a plain comedy version of the original and irrelevant to the concept of it. Here’s a good example of a spoof. A parody entitled â€Å"Hipon† (Payphone Parody) by Sir Rex Kantatero ft. Shehyee http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mguMEXQIrHs; a spoof of the music video of a song called Payphone by Maroon 5. It’s evident that people are confused by the concept of a parody and a spoof; even though the title states it’s a â€Å"Parody† but it is an example of a spoof. In here, we can see that the maker of the spoof incorporates the tune of the original work but alters the concept and the lyrics of it. He just makes fun of the tune and basically added humor on its lyrics and video. The new concept of the video was completely irrelevant to the original and doesn’t contain any critique about the original one. Satire is still a very broad concept, but I will not go on there. What’s important is that we have already differentiated the concept of â€Å"Parody† and a â€Å"Spoof†. Yes they are both copy or an imitation of an original work and contains humor but what makes a â€Å"Parody† different from a â€Å"Spoof† is that it still obviously incorporates the concept of the original and has a little altering and it’s purpose is to critically comment on the original work. Whereas a â€Å"Spoof† it’s just a plain comedic version of the original. It doesn’t contain the concept of the original work and any critical comment pertaining on the original one. Colonialism and Independence in Chinua Achebes Things Fall Apart :: Things Fall Apart essays

Things Fall Apart - Colonialism and Independence "Turning and turning in the widening gyre The Falcon cannot hear the falconer; Things fall apart; the center cannot hold; Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world." ~W.B. Yeats, "The Second Coming" This excerpt is almost a summary of Chinua Achebe's Things Fall Apart. Things Fall Apart is a novel about nineteenth century Nigeria, before colonialism and the granting of independence. It is a story of a great wrestler and elder of a Nigerian clan comprised of several villages. It tells about his life from start to finish in great detail. Towards the end of the novel, the reader is introduced to colonialism. This colonialism is what the anarchy is the above quote is referring to. The falcon represents the young generation of the clan; the falconer represents the elders. This is a story of how things really do fall apart. The story is centered around Okonkwo, a great wrestler and elder of the clan. He is the son of an indolent man, who was constantly in debt. Okonkwo's father was often referred to as a woman, which was a great insult. Growing up, Okonkwo develops a phobia of becoming his father, and does everything is his power not to. With this phobia came an abominable stubbornness. His first step in becoming a "real man" (opposed to his father) was to prove his strength, in doing so he became the great wrestler of his clan. Doing so earned him a lot of accolades and honours. He earned a lot of land, and married three different wives. However, with all of his fame and fortune, he was unable to escape his internal conflicts due to his stubbornness and his becoming frustrated easily. One example of this was when a young male warrior and a young virgin girl were sent to Okonkwo's village in exchange (as a sacrifice) for a heinous crime committed against his clan. This was a crime that otherwise would have resulted in an all out war; a war which Okonkwo's clan and village would have earned an easy victory. The young boy is sent to live with Okonkwo and his family for quite some time. During this time Okonkwo becomes very attached to him, so attached that it seems as if the boy is one of his own.

Work In A Business Environment

For the following unit, you can either write a statement on the criteria listed below or you can make notes and we can have a taped discussion at our next visit:Understand how to respect other people at workDescribe what is meant by diversity and why it should be valued Diversity can be different races, heritage, customs, belief systems, physical appearance, mental and physical capabilities. Diversity should be respected and valued as nobody is the same. Our difference can lead to growth and development but also problems as these differences can cause tension in a workplace. Regardless of their background, everyone has a right to their own thoughts and opinions which can be beneficial to the company.Describe how to treat other people in a way that is sensitive to their needs Treat every person the way that you want them to treat you. Observe each individual that you encounter and analyse what needs they may have and try to meet those needs. Physically disabled people need more time t o move around the office area, to treat this person correctly and with respect I would hold doors open and keep walk ways clear.Disabled mentally, anyone of a high mental disability would not be encountered in my area of work but if I did come across someone who clearly needed more help I would do everything I could to try to help and keep the person relaxed. Person of a strong religion, never discriminate against them because of their beliefs or use any offensive language- this is applicable to every person in office and visitor in office.Describe how to treat other people in a way that respects their abilities, background, values, customs and beliefs The best way to be tolerant, open minded person is to always remember that everyone has different ways of doing things and that most of the time there is not just one right way of doing something. People almost always like explaining their own culture and beliefs, so asking them questions are usually a good way of starting a conversat ion.People don’t usually take offense if they can see you are honestly trying to learn about them. The fact that you are interested in the first place means that you are probably already a tolerant person. Most people are uncomfortable about other cultures because they are unfamiliar with them and are made nervous by what they do not know.Describe ways in which it possible to learn from others at work†¢Ask people for information †¢Ask people to show you how to do things †¢Ask people about their beliefs, culture and customs and getting them to explain what they do or believe and why they do so †¢Talk to people a lot †¢Listen to what other people have to say †¢Watch other people to see what they are doing †¢Work with other people and in team/group tasksNow give me an example of a time when you have learnt from someone else at work (this could have been when you first started- did you receive training on your new work role etc) I still learn so mething new as my responsibilities have been change a lot since I have started work in Cold Chain. Every time when new duties come across to me I always try to get as many information as I can from appropriate person and record a notice just in case if I forgot.Understand how to maintain security and confidentiality at work and deal with concernsDescribe the purpose and benefits of maintaining security and confidentiality at work Most of this information is now collected, processed and stored on electronic computers and transmitted across networks to other computers. Should confidential information about a business’s customers or finances fall into the hands of a competitor, such a breach of security could lead to a loss of business, law suits and bankruptcy. Protecting confidential information is a business requirement, and in many cases also an ethical and legal requirement.Describe requirements for security and confidentiality in an organisation If an organisation stores a ny information on people its needs to meet  requirements set out in the Data Protection Act. The information should be stored securely whether it is paper based or electronically. The organisation should have an access to information policy. Anyone who has information stored about them has access to it on request and after completing security procedures (all vary depending on organisation). The information should not be given to third parties unless there are criminal implications and the courts demand it, or it is with the consent of the person themselves. In large organisations such as Rolls Royce (Derby) all employees must have their ID badges to gain access to sites; they also have a complex data and computer system to ensure the confidentiality and security of their most sensitive files. Describe legal requirements for security and confidentiality, as required †¢Data Protection Act 1998: The Data Protection Act 1998 (DPA 1998) is an act of the United Kingdom Parliament de fining the ways in which information about living people may be legally used and handled. The main intent is to protect individuals against misuse or abuse of information about them. The DPA was first composed in 1984 and was updated in 1998.†¢ Copyright, Design and Patent Act 1988: The Copyright, Design and Patent Act 1988 is the current UK copyright law. It gives the creators of literacy, dramatic, musical and artistic works the right to control the ways in which their material may be used. The rights cover: broadcast and public performance, copying and adapting, issuing, renting and lending copies to the public. In many cases, the creator will also have the right to be identified as the author and to object to the distorting of their work.Describe procedures for dealing with concerns about security and confidentiality in an organisation †¢Identify potential problems†¢ Identify implications (potential loss) of each problem †¢Determine possible preventative meas ures (and cost of each measure) †¢Assign a risk factor to each problemNow give me an example of a work task that you have completed where you have has to keep the information confidential A company decided to issue laptops to its managerial staff. IT determined that the risk and cost of losing confidential company data stored on the laptops was ‘high’. The solutions  was to ‘move’ the ‘My Documents’ folder from users laptops to the companies servers (in order to access documents when away from the office, you would have to log-in across the internet (VPN)).The directors, being technically illiterate, were incapable of logging into anything- so their laptops were made an exception. So whilst the canteen managers next week menus were safely stored on the companies server, the new product launch plans were revealed to the competition when the inevitable happened and a directors laptop was left in a taxi.Understand the purpose and procedures for keeping waste to a minimum in a business environmentExplain the purpose of keeping waste to a minimumKeeping waste to a minimum in the business environment serves the same purpose as it does everywhere else. It decreases the amount of waste a business contributes to the environment (this can include solid waste, water waste and carbon emissions). Reducing waste is key to minimising an individuals or business’s environmental impact by reducing air and water pollutions and limiting the amount of materials that end up in landfills. Reducing waste can also serve to save business money.By enacting plans that conserve materials, they will inevitably cut down on the amount of materials they need to purchase. Likewise any attempt to reduce carbon emissions inevitably relies on a reduction of energy use, which means less money spent on electricity and fuel. The advantage of applying waste minimising principles in a business environment is that it impacts a larger number of people . Such actions also serve to improve a business’s image.Describe the main causes of waste that may occur in a business environment Can mean wasting time, energy or office equipment.Time = internet, people doing personal tasks, inter-office socialising, not being productive because of poor management directions, lack of knowledge regarding workload and work process. Office supplies = theft, excessive use of printing when not needed, personal use of office equipment by employees, people not proof reading or checking documents for mistakes. Energy = leaving lights and PC’s turned on at night when no one is there, keeping  heat or air conditioning turned too high or low, inefficient use of company vehicles.Describe ways of keeping waste to a minimumKeep the faxes, printers and copiers in good working order so that they produce good copies and don’t ‘eat’ copies and jam. Order good quality paper that is the recommended weight for the office machine. El iminate the conformation page of the fax by changing the settings. Periodically ask everyone to purge their desks of excess pens, stickers, sticky notes and other supplies. Order a reasonable amount of supplies for a shot period so there is not a feeling of oversupply and that usage doesn’t matter. Set expectations that people do not take supplies home with them, or use printers/copiers for excessive amounts. Organise supplies and remove those that are out of date. Request that people ask for supplies from a specific person by a deadline. Turning off equipment and lights will also help reduce waste.Identify ways of using technology to reduce wasteYou can email people instead of writing letters and notes out on paper and leaving them lying around. You could also phone someone instead of writing a letter out to them this is the quickest way of communication as long as the other person answers, this will save you time, ink and paper. If a machine in your office has broken down t hen you could email the person who supplied you with it to come and take it away or you could call them to come and take it away as soon as possible. If your company has a shredder that does all the shredding for you then you could use that to get rid of waste paper, it would also destroy any sensitive and confidential details/information. Sending bills/invoices/statements via email saves paper and ink also saves money that would have been spent on Franking. Some companies will have a purchase order control for ordering stationary, when staff have sent their requests through the orders are checked by a manager who will determine how necessary the orders and can decline orders should they know sufficient supplies are available.Outline the purpose and benefits of recyclingRecycling at work is a great way to increase your business sustainability and help to reduce climate change. Once you start to recycle at work you’ll experience the wide range of benefits that come with making your company a more sustainable and environmentally responsible organisation. †¢ Enhances company image- Engaging in greener business practices and publishing those practises can do wonders for your company image and can attract both employees and customers. †¢ Recycling is easy to do- Recycling at work is straight forward and easy to do. It’s easy to separate out materials to recycle from your other waste, if you get a good system in place its easy to implement and maintain.†¢ Recycling increases customer loyalty- Customers prefer to do business with companies that behave in an environmentally-friendly way. †¢ Recycling often reduces clutter and saves space- Recycling often reduces clutter and improves the working environment. Less clutter also means increased safety around your workplace. †¢ Recycling is great for the environment- Recycling at work helps you reduce the environmental impact of your business. Recycling your waste materials means they can be used again in new products and applications, instead of simply going into landfills where they generate harmful greenhouse gas emissions.†¢ Increases employee morale- Employee satisfaction is the best reason to undertake a recycling scheme. Employees find great pride in working for a company that embodies environmental values and focuses attention on its environmental impact and responsibilities. †¢ Recycling is cost effective- Recycling is a cost effective method of dealing with your waste, simple because is it often cheaper when compared with general waste management and disposal.Describe organisational procedures for recycling materials†¢sensitization †¢collection †¢storage †¢sorting †¢distribution †¢recycling to raw material †¢manufacture †¢marketingNow give me an example of a time when you have recycled at work We using three separate bins for rubbish: paper, plastic, and rest.Understand procedures for disposal of hazardo us materialsDescribe the benefits of procedures for the recycling and disposal of hazardous materials Hazardous waste refuses, recycling and reclamation can avoid environmental hazards, protect scarce natural resources, provide economic benefits and reduce the nation’s reliance on raw materials and energy. †¢ Environmental benefits- Recycling hazardous waste reduced the consumption of raw materials by reducing the volume of waste materials that must be treated and disposed of. Recycling hazardous waste can mean less air, water and soil pollution associated with the extraction, refining and processing of raw materials, recycling can also reduce emissions of greenhouse gases. When hazardous wastes are recycled, less energy is needed to extract, transport and process raw materials and manufacture products. When energy demands decreases fewer fossil fuels are burned and less carbon dioxide is emitted into the atmosphere. Emissions of other air pollutants can be reduced too, a s recycling hazardous wastes can decrease release of air toxics from waste incineration. †¢ Economic benefits- Not only can hazardous waste recycling be good for the environment it can also be good for the bottom line. Recycling hazardous waste can increase production efficiency and reduce costs associated with purchasing raw materials and waste management.By recycling hazardous materials a business may be able to eliminate the generation of hazardous waste. A business may also benefit from the positive or ‘green’ image associated with hazardous waste recycling efforts. For example, a company who values strong corporate stewardship can increase good will with shareholders and consumers and further distinguish itself from its competition.Describe organisational procedures for the recycling and disposal of hazardous materials Generally in the UK you have to write a COSHH (Control Of Substances Hazardous to Health) assessment for the disposal of hazardous  materials . There is no one safe method and each substance must be individually assessed. For example, the disposal of a lead-acid battery is different to the disposal of an alkaline battery which again is different to the disposal of a metal hydride rechargeable battery. All these contain toxic compounds that can be recycled. Thus the procedure is to write a COSHH assessment for each substance to be disposed of or recycled. This comprises writing an assessment of the hazards and risks, the safety precautions that are needed, what to do if something goes wrong and how to contain the waste material at the end. For example, something like sulphuric acid can be rendered harmless in its disposal procedure, meaning that the end product can be disposed of by normal means. Other substances may remain hazardous, even after processing, and a special disposal method is needed. Here at UK Waterproofing Solutions Ltd we do not recycle any hazardous materials from the office base, however when out on sites our men deal with the recycling of plastics, bitumen, rubble and asbestos.Know how to support sustainability in an organisationOutline the purpose of improving efficiency and minimising waste The purpose of improving efficiency is so that raw materials can be managed in order to minimise waste and therefore reduce costs. Also, minimising waste can have a positive effect on the environment. One of the most fundamental ways to improve efficiency is to minimise waste, you can do this in three main ways: †¢ Compliance with the Waste Minimisation Act 2008 and any equivalent laws in the countries your business operates. †¢ Voluntary measures: these might include undertaking a waste audit and creating a company waste minimisation policy. †¢ Sharing waste minimisation knowledge with partners in your supply chainDescribe ways of improving own working methods and use of technology to achieve efficiency and reduce waste

Should Countries Encourage Tourism?

Nowadays, it is almost a routine, that people every year go to holydays. Often they travel to the places abroad. These places are often very popular and well-known. Even though these places are popular, the countries still promote them and want more people to come. This is because tourism is very important for the economy but not in all cases for the citizens. If so, should countries encourage tourism? Firstly, tourism leads to the development of the country. The desire to attract tourists to a certain area often encourages governments to improve local facilities which is beneficial for both, citizens and tourists. On the other hand, the development of the country must be somehow controlled and planned in such a way, it does not destroy the natural beauty of the country. Over-development leads to ugly, crowded tourist spots and environmental damage. Consequently, the development if necessary but is has to be done thoroughfully. Secondly, tourism has some positive and negative effects on a country’s economy. Many people claim that tourism is an important source of income. This is illustrated by the fact that in the touristic countries are very few possibilities to find a job not connected with tourism. Nevertheless, country’s economy may become so dependent on tourism that it is weakened and when something unexpected happens, for example a natural disaster, that tourist do not arrive for a long time, the country is helpless because of lack of resources. Thirdly, tourism greatly influences the citizens’ culture. Tourism allows people to experience other cultures. They may see how foreigners behave, what clothes they wear or what are their customs. However, this impact of tourism may destroy the local way of life. For instance the customs of the local people may simply disappear and be displaced by those brought by the foreigners and the local uniqueness changes into cultural mixture. To conclude, there are arguments to both, that countries should and should not encourage tourism. On the one hand, we have economic advantages and possibilities to experience other cultures. On the other hand, tourism overused may lead to the economic weakness of a country and to permanent changes of the local culture.

Macbeth Essays (1130 words) - Characters In Macbeth, Free Essays

Macbeth Essays (1130 words) - Characters In Macbeth, Free Essays Macbeth There are many forms of imagery in the world today. They usually take on two main forms, those being visual and mental. Word means different thing to different people. The Websters Dictionary defines it as, in rhetoric, representations in writing or speaking; lively descriptions which impress the images of things on the mind; figures in discourse. This once again goes back to the idea of mental imagery and the different ways people interpret things. In William Shakespeares Macbeth. Imagery is connected to both character development as well as theme and are patterned throughout the play. From the beginning of the play we are introduced to image of darkness. It was called upon by Banquo, Macbeth and Lady Macbeth. In his aside to Macbeth "But tis strange: And oftentimes, to win us to our harm, The instruments of darkness tell us truths, Win us with honest trifles, to betray us In deepest consequence" (I, II, 131-135) Banquo shows that he is immediately aware that the witches are associated with darkness. He chooses not to act on the witches prophecies, but rather to be wary and reluctant. He is not ready to involve himself with the witches, as he sees them as a dark force. However Macbeth is on opportunist and the image of darkness reveals his deepest, darkest desires. This is shown in Macbeth's aside. "The Prince of Cumberland! that is a step On which I must fall down or else o'ver-leap, For in my way it lies. Stars, hide your fires; Let not light see my black and deep desires" (I, IV, 55-58) It becomes apparent that, it bothered Macbeth a great deal to hear that Malcolm was named successor to King Duncan, he then calls on darkness to hide his evil thoughts. Lady Macbeth does the same, she conjures up the forces of darkness, to make sure the heavens don't see her having these thoughts. "Come, thick night, And pall thee in the dunnest smoke of hell, That my keen knife see not the wound it makes, N'or heaven peep through the blanket of the dark, To cry, "Hold, hold!" (I, V, 53-57) By the end of Act I, we can see that Macbeth and Lady Macbeth have sided with "Darkness". By listening to the prompting of the witches they have given in to them and side with the forces of evil. But, Banquo, is still cautious about the idea of even and darkness. He shows us that the witches ae only tell partial truths that look pretty at first, but, will hurt you in the end. This also brings to us to the theme of evil and how it does the same thing. It comes across as being very tempting but, will definitely bring you down in the end. Another strong image in the play is "blood". It is perhaps the most powerful image of Macbeth's character change. One such image is portrayed just before Macbeth visits the witches for the second time. He says to his wife, Lady Macbeth that "For mine own good All causes shall give away; I am in blood Stepp'd in so for, that, should I wade no more, Returning were as tedious as go o'er:" (III, IV, 166-169) This says that he is no longer concerned with who is in his way as long as he gets to the top. He is being driven by evil once again. The blood image shows that once Macbeth sided with the forces of darkness, killing Duncan, he was overwhelmed and would never escape evil's ugly grasp. Thus changing his character forever. It also effects the them of the play. In Elizabethan times, to be named King you were appointed by God. So, to kill a King you are going against God, thus once again siding with evil. So when Macbeth murdered King Duncan it was almost like a "cardinal sin". So bad in fact than he would never be able to clean his hands of the blood. If he were to try to clean his hands there would be so much of it that it would turn the oceans red with the blood of the King (God). This point is made clear by Macbeth when he says. "Will all great Neptune's oceans wash this blood Clean from my hand? No; this my hand will rather the multitudinous seas incarnadine, Making

Shakespeares Vocabulary

Shakespeares Vocabulary Shakespeares Vocabulary Shakespeares Vocabulary By Maeve Maddox Shakespeare (1564-1616) wrote during the Renaissance, a time when the English language was being inundated with new words. Based on a count from the OED, between 10,000 and 12,000 new words were added to English during the 16th century. About half have found a permanent place in the language. The majority of the new words came from Latin and were used by educated people who wrote books. They jumped quickly from the printed page into everyday speechpresumably by way of such popular entertainments as plays and sermons. The character of Sir Andrew Aguecheek in Twelfth Night may reflect the eagerness of non-scholars to learn new words: VIOLA [to Olivia] Most excellent accomplished lady, the heavens rain odours on you! SIR ANDREW [aside] That youths a rare courtier: Rain odours; well. VIOLA My matter hath no voice, to your own most pregnant and vouchsafed ear. SIR ANDREW Odours, pregnant and vouchsafed: Ill get em all three all ready. Except for a professional translator like Philemon Holland (1552-1637), Shakespeare used the largest vocabulary of any English writer. Some of the words he used in his plays are documented only a year or two before his use of them: exist, initiate, and jovial, for example. Its impossible to say how many words Shakespeare coined, but his works provide the first documentation for words including accommodation, apostrophe, assassination, dexterously, dislocate, frugal, indistinguishable, misanthrope, obscene, pedant, premeditated, reliance, and submerged. He makes fun of some of the new words going round by putting them in the mouths of pompous clowns like Holofernes in Loves Labours Lost: HOLOFERNES The deer was, as you know, sanguis, in blood; ripe as the pomewater, who now hangeth like a jewel in the ear of caelo, the sky, the welkin, the heaven; and anon falleth like a crab on the face of terra, the soil, the land, the earth. SIR NATHANIEL Truly, Master Holofernes, the epithets are sweetly varied, like a scholar at the least: but, sir, I assure ye, it was a buck of the first head. †¦ HOLOFERNES Most barbarous intimation! yet a kind of insinuation, as it were, in via, in way, of explication; facere, as it were, replication, or rather, ostentare, to show, as it were, his inclination, after his undressed, unpolished, uneducated, unpruned, untrained, or rather, unlettered, or ratherest, unconfirmed fashion, to insert again my haud credo for a deer. Shakespearean words we still use are agile, allurement, antipathy, catastrophe, critical, demonstrate, dire, emphasis, emulate, extract, hereditary, horrid, impertinent, meditate, modest, pathetic, prodigious, vast, barricade, cavalier, mutiny, and pell-mell. The meanings of many of these words have changed since the 16th century. For example, we use communicate to mean exchange information. When Shakespeare uses it in Comedy of Errors, it still had the Latin meaning of to share or make common to many. In Merchant of Venice, Lorenzo uses expect (from Latin expectare, to await) in the sense of to wait for: †¦lets in and there expect their coming. The word humorous has been used in English with various senses before coming to mean comical or funny, including the meanings damp, capricious, moody, and peevish. Five of the words that Shakespeare made fun in the speech of Holofernes (intimation, insinuation, explication, replication, and inclination) caught on and survived into modern usage. Some of the same educators who are willing to drop the study of Shakespeare from the general curriculum probably complain about a decline in vocabulary in todays high school graduates. There may be no connection, but the fact remains that the close study of even one of Shakespeares plays will yield a significant jump in vocabulary for the serious reader. The causes and impact of unemployment in the United Kingdom Coursework

The causes and impact of unemployment in the United Kingdom - Coursework Example For these reason further insights into how society deals with unemployment is necessary. Stratification is a principal aspect of the evolution of a society's social identity, when this is compounded with unemployment, alienation and dysfunction becomes a consequence. Until the late 1980s the unemployment rate in England remained low (about 5%). However, by late 1990 the unemployment rate began to increase and by the end of 1992 had climbed to 15%, reaching a peak in early 1994 of 19%. (Statistics England 1994) Unemployment also grew in other European countries, although not as rapidly as in England. In 1994, the average European Union unemployment rate was 12%. Long-term joblessness has become more common in England and redundancy now also affects the white-collar occupations. (Statistics England 1994) Research into the possible health effects of unemployment is thus more timely than ever. Previous studies of individuals have shown that mortality rates are higher in the unemployed than the employed persons. (Moser 1984; Bethune 1996) The causal effect of unemployment and selection bias have been suggested as two possible mechanisms to explain this finding. (Valkonen 1995) Becoming jobless and long-term unemployment may have adverse effect... An increase in tobacco, alcohol, and drug use may also be indicative of attempts to cope with this stress. Other outcomes of unemployment such as loss of income, material deprivation, loss of networks, and social stigma may have independent effects on health and mortality but may also increase the stress experienced by the unemployed. Selection bias is encountered when unemployed people or those who have difficulty in becoming re-employed have pre-existing ill-health. Selection bias may also be due to socio-economic factors such as social class and housing tenure; lifestyle risks like tobacco and alcohol consumption and poor diet or personal characteristics such as increased age, sex, physical weakness, and psychological dysfunction that increase the risk of premature mortality. Although the direct selection of people with pre-existing ill-health may not be of paramount importance, (Martikainen 1990; Morris 1994) lack of data about personal characteristics and lifestyle make it difficult to control for all possible selection factors. Aggregate-level studies that use regional populations or occupational groups as their units of analysis, have generally not shown a relation between changes in unemployment and mortality rates. (Valkonen 1995; Martikainen 1955) These results suggest that selection may account for a large part of the excess mortality of unemployed persons. The aim of this study was to estimate the strength of the association between unemployment, re-employment, and mortality during rapidly increasing unemployment in England. The results for the total British population of men and women are presented. As in previous individual-level studies, we sought to reduce the possible effects of selection by

Public health Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words - 6

Public health - Essay Example In this paper, the views of different health experts such as John Snow and Florence Nightingale will put into the mirror and be compared and contrasted to those of Aggleton. John Snow concept of health and illness rotates around is research on cholera (Thomas, 1973). The spread of cholera was not his issue but the cause of the disease. He argues that the cholera was a consequence of air pollution (Chepelle, 2005). He argues that air pollution led to the development of the cholera causing bacteria that eventually affected people (Donaldson, 2005). His argument on the prevention of the disease is that for human beings to be safe they needed to live and work in an environment free from pollution. Florence Nightingale experience on social health revolves around the healing process of an individual patient. She notes that the environment is the most basic consideration that instigates the healing of the patient. Her analysis assures patients that they can only health faster when placed in a clean environment (Last, 2007). Florence’s definition of a clean environment focuses on various facilities. Foremost, she says fresh air is important as the patient will be able to breathe in and out without affecting the respiratory system (Kozier, et al., 2004). Pure water is also important to the patient as it does not carry any organism that may cause diseases (Craven & Hirnle, 2003). Proper drainage system is also praised as poor drainage may be a breeding ground for disease-causing organisms such as mosquitoes. She adds that the cleanliness is important to both the health providers and the patient. Lastly, she mentions the important of light in the healing process and notes tha t light is crucial for treatment of diseases. Aggleton focuses on the influence of the society in achieving proper health. Society for a long time has been divided into relation to the economic status of a person. Individuals in the
